Internet Business Glossary

Below I maintain a glossary that describes concepts related to internet business.


C

Country Code Top Level Domain – Abbreviated as ccTLD, these domains are country specific and are reserved for specific countries.

Comment Policy – A comment policy page that explains what type of comments are allowed and what comments will be deleted.

B

Blog – A part of a website that has posts published in chronological order and are typically organized by categories and tags.

Blogger (Service) – Founded in 1999 and acquired by Google in 2003, this blogging platform has been allowing people to publish and profit from content marketing.

D

DNSSEC – An infrastructure level security protocol for high value targets.

Disclosure Page – Your site needs a disclosure policy if you’re engaging in a affiliate marketing and advertising. Make clear any conflicts of interest that may not otherwise be apparent.

DCMA take down notice – DMCA stands for Digital Millennium Copyright Act. It’s a law passed in the United States back in 1998 that helps protect copyrighted content (music, movies, writing, books etc) on the internet.

Email Alias – An alternative email address that masks your real email.

Email Hosting – Dedicated hosting for email, documents and inboxes.

Fulfillment Policy – This page explains to customers the process of preparing and delivering orders to customers

Media Kit – A media kit is a concise, professional page, document or package that showcases your brand to potential partners, advertisers, or press.

Microsoft 365 – A cloud based, subscription service that contains powerful desktop tools, enterprise security and Microsoft ecosystem of productivity tools.

Minimum Viable Product (MVP) – The first iteration of a product, designed with the essential features needed to meet the needs of early adopters while collecting valuable feedback for future improvements.

Permalinks – The permanent URL for pages and posts on a website.

Patreon – A popular membership platform that offers video hosting and ability to offer paid products.

Privacy Policy – An important legal pages that discloses to the the user what data is being collected by visiting your website and how to opt out.

Refund Policy – Clearly explain to your customers how to go about issuing a refund for any products purchased from you.

W

Web Hosting – A server (type of computer) that is on 24/7, maintained by a web hosting company with the purpose of making your website available 24/7.

WHOIS Protection – Often marketing as domain privacy, this keeps your personal information private when registering a domain name.

WordPress Hosting – A type of hosting that is a specialized service designed specifically for websites built on the WordPress platform.

Shipping Policy – Layout what buyers f rom your online store can expect with regards to receiving their orders. Make it concise, transparent, and easy to skim.

Solopreneur – A business of one person that builds, manages, and operates a venture entirely on their own, without any employees or partners (the occasional freelancer is allowed).

T

Terms and conditions page – This page explains what policies users agree to by visiting your website as well as how they can opt out.

Top level domain name – A top-level domain (TLD) is the highest level in the hierarchical Domain Name System managed by ICANN.

Vibe coding – Using AI to create 90% or more of your code base. Typically a term used to describe novices using AI to code up applications, games, and website features.
