After diving deep into Fourthwall for selling digital products and merchandise through YouTube’s product shelf and building out an online store with the platform, here’s my honest assessment of what works well and where the platform falls short.

The Pros ✅

Fourthwall has a lot going for it if you’re in the market for building an online store to sell digital products and print on demand merchandise.

1. Free to Start with Reasonable Fees

Fourthwall offers a completely free plan with just a 5% fee on digital products. Compare this to Gumroad’s 10% and you’re keeping significantly more of your revenue. There are no fees on merchandise (just markup from base cost) or products you sell yourself.

2. YouTube Product Shelf Integration

The product shelf integration is easy enough and puts your products directly in front of your audience. Once you hit 500 subscribers, you can start listing out both merchandise as well as digital products directly below the YouTube video description automatically.

You get impression and click data right in YouTube Studio and can add in Google Analytics if you want.

3. Print-on-Demand Merchandise

The merchandise quality is surprisingly good, and Fourthwall handles all manufacturing and shipping. You simply upload designs and they take care of the rest. No inventory management, no shipping headaches. Just quality physical products shipped directly to your customers.

4. Built-in Membership Features

You can create tiered memberships with exclusive content, perks, and video series. It’s all in one platform rather than needing separate tools for products and memberships.

5. Abandoned Cart Recovery

The ability to automatically send discount codes to people who don’t complete checkout is a powerful conversion tool that many competitors don’t offer on free plans.

6. Custom Domain Support

Even on the free plan, you can connect your own domain name for a professional look. The “Entry” integration makes DNS setup painless and quick for a non-technical person. I love how they don’t put this feature behind any sort of paywall.

7. Promo Codes and Giveaways

Built-in promotional tools help you drive sales and reward your community without needing third-party solutions.

8. One-Click Bump Offers

The slide-out cart with additional product suggestions at checkout is a smart upsell feature that can increase average order value.

The Cons ❌

1. No Learning Management System (LMS)

This is the biggest limitation if you’re primarily looking to sell online courses. When you upload course content, buyers simply download video files directly to their computer.

There’s no structured learning environment with:

I personally don’t like the user experience of someone downloading my video content directly. I would prefer a structured lesson format. If you’re serious about selling online courses, you’ll need a dedicated LMS like Teachable or Thinkific.

2. Cookie-Cutter Design Options

All Fourthwall stores look the same generally speaking. You can’t customize layouts much beyond moving pre-built blocks around. The templates are functional but restrictive, expect your store to look similar to other Fourthwall stores.

3. File Size Limitations

The 1GB limit per file on the free plan can be restrictive for high-quality video courses. On the free plan your course can be a max size of 5 GB unless you’re willing to upgrade your account to a paid plan which your courses can be 100 GB.

4. Limited Page Customization

While you can create custom pages, the styling options are basic. If you want a truly unique brand experience, you’ll feel constrained by the platform’s limitations.

5. Product Template Restrictions

The product pages follow a set template with minimal customization. You can adjust padding and button text, but the overall layout is fixed.

The layout is also more ideal for physical products like print on demand merchandise. But you can make it work with digital products.

6. Single Theme Only

There’s only one theme available (“Clean Frame”). While it’s clean and functional, you don’t get to choose from different style options or aesthetics.

7. Video Hosting Bandwidth

For membership video content set to “Everyone,” you need the Pro plan due to bandwidth requirements. This limits your ability to offer free preview content unless you use members-only settings.

8. Setup Time for Product Approval

After connecting to YouTube’s product shelf, products need review and can take up to 24 hours (typically 12 hours) to go live. Not really Fourthwalls fault here, but it’s worth mentioning.

Who Should Use Fourthwall?

Final words

Fourthwall excels at what it’s designed for: a straightforward, affordable way to sell digital products and merchandise through YouTube’s product shelf. The pricing is fair, the YouTube integration is seamless, and the print-on-demand quality is solid.

However, the lack of an LMS is a dealbreaker for serious course creators. Downloading video files is not a learning experience, it’s just file distribution. If you’re selling courses, you need a platform built for education, not just product delivery.

For merchandise and simple digital products (PDFs, templates, presets), Fourthwall is excellent. For online courses, look elsewhere or use it as a supplementary storefront while hosting your actual course content on a dedicated LMS.

My recommendation

Use Fourthwall for what it does well, merch and digital downloads and don’t try to force it into being a course platform it was never designed to be. The membership feature is also useful as you can organize content into video series, but I find Patreon to be better.
