The 9 Best AI Art Generators (Desktop and Mobile)

David Utke •  Updated: December 8, 2022 •  Artificial Intelligence Tools

With an AI Art Generator you can create some pretty wild and amazing images. However, it is important that you select the right AI art generator depending on your needs. Maybe you want to do print on demand, start an Instagram art account, create an artsy bio pic for social media or even create a series of NFT’s.

With so many options available for both desktop and mobile, it can be difficult to know which one to choose. In this guide, I breakdown the best AI art generators, so that you can find the perfect one for your needs.

What is AI Art?

AI art is artwork made through artificial intelligence (AI). This type of art is unique in that the artist’s computer program creates the work autonomously with the human input only in the form of text and variable inputs.

Through artificial intelligence, these apps can generate new pieces of art in various styles and mediums. With AI image generators, you can now create portraits, landscapes, and abstract art that reflect the styles of famous artists or that are entirely new.

This technology has tons of possibilities and is changing how we think about the art creation process because machine learning allows artists to take their craft to a new and strange level.

The best AI art generators

Jasper AI – Fast, easy, fun

Prompt: “An astronaut riding a unicorn through space.”

Jasper AI tops the list because it’s by far the easiest, fastest and most effective AI art generator. You simply type in a prompt like “astronaut riding a unicorn through space” and then the art generator gets to work and churns out 4 different images for you to download.

On top of that you can set specific parameters for things like art style, overall mood of the image and the medium of the image (modern, oil painting, futuristic and so forth). Last, this AI art generator is fast. I’ve used other tools and it sometimes took up to 5 minutes to generate a single image.

Not so with Jasper AI art. Create hundreds of images in a day. The only limit if your creativity. Please note that NSFW prompts are strictly prohibited. If you’re looking for a solid AI art generator Jasper has been an outstanding performer.

Mid Journey – Free 25 images

Prompt: “Sith lord holding a red light saber atop ruins.”

Mid journey is an independent research lab that produces a artificial intelligence program called “Stable Diffusion.” The tool currently takes textual descriptions and creates images, similar to OpenAI’s DALL-E. Right now, the beta version of Stable Diffusion is open for anyone to use.

To get started with Mid Journey you’ll need to join their Discord and then through the Discord you’ll get access to the AI tools to generate images. New users can create up to 25 images then you’ll need to subscribe to full access to the bot to create additional images. The current pricing can be found here.

Overall Mid Journey is quite impressive though my be a bit technical for new users who are not familiar with how a Discord channel works as you type in prompts directly to the bot to generate images.

Lensa – Create stunning avatar images

Created with Lensa.

Never worry about your selfies looking less than perfect again with Lensa. With this app, you can quickly and easily edit your photos to look better than ever before, and then some. This is the simplest and most practical mobile app available for improving your selfie images or just outright letting the AI reimagine your picture.

Lensa is not just an AI app for pictures, it’s also a highly functional image editor with advanced filters and features allowing you to make adjustments to your skin, eyes, background and more. They also have an auto adjust that does everything for you as well.

Dall E2 – Realistic images from a prompt

Prompt: “Teddy bears working on new AI research underwater with 1990s technology.”

DALL·E 2 can create never-before-seen images and art by reading and understanding a text description. It then combine these concepts, attributes, and styles to produce new content. Not only does this AI fill in the gaps of an image, it can also expand the existing borders to create new compositions.

With this tool, you can edit existing images by simply writing a caption in natural language. It’s easy to add and remove elements, and the shadows, reflections, and textures are all accounted for. With this tool, you also can take an image and create different variations of it that are inspired by the original.

Finally, DALL·E 2 uses diffusion to gradually recreate an image from a series of random dots. It does this by recognizing specific patterns in the image and replicating them with the dots.

Hugging Face – The best totally free option

Prompt: “High tech solarpunk utopia in the Amazon rainforest.”

As AI Art Generators take a lot of resources to produce images and the demand for such tech is outstripping the supply, the best AI art generators do have a pay wall. However, if you’re looking for something totally free to use then checkout “Stable Diffusion 2” a Hugging Face space.

This tool generates four images you can download and use. However, the image quality is quite low and not practical for most applications. As a free tool, it’s also a bit slower (but not unreasonable) when creating pictures. Images tend to look best at a small 300×300 size. However, this tool is totally free to use and is a good first step into the world of AI art.

To create images is very simple, all you have to do is type in a detailed prompt and then have the tool generate an image based on your prompt. For the best image, be as detailed as possible.

Dream by WOMBO – Free mobile app

Prompt: “Michael Jackson and Justin Bieber drinking coffee together.”

With Dream by WOMBO, you can create beautiful digital artwork quickly and easily. Just upload your input image, choose a style, and let the AI do the rest. Whether you’re looking to recreate art in the styles of famous painters or want to explore new techniques, Wombo.art is a great tool for anyone interested in creating art digitally.

This tool allows for artists to quickly and easily create high-quality artwork, whether their goal is to make money off of their art or simply create digital products. By inputting a few words, you can unlock billions of potential project ideas with this art generator. A few seconds after submitting your request, you’ll get high-quality images that fit the style you’re looking for perfectly.

While this tool is free and fun to use, I did find that the quality of images was creepy and off putting when it tried to create people. But, if you’re looking for a free app that you can use on both mobile and desktop the take a look at Dream.ai.

Avatar AI – Create your profile pic

Created by Levels.io, Avatar AI let’s you get over 120 AI Avatars in a variety of styles, both festive and year-round. They make for great gifts for you or a loved one! You can also use the avatars as profile pictures or social media posts.

The app is high quality and easy to use. Plus, your data is deleted within 24 hours so you don’t have to worry about it being sold without your knowledge like other apps do. Finally, they implement location specific pricing so it’s more affordable depending on your location.

Deep Dream Generator – Create fantasy landscapes

Prompt: “A futuristic house hanging off a cliff above the clouds in the mountains.”

With Deep Dream Generator, you can create art that is AI-generated that is best for landscape type images. This is helpful and fun tool for anyone who wants to understand how artificial intelligence works better by seeing the different algorithms in action and how they affect images.

Deep Dream Generator uses a deep neural network to create images, making it perfect for abstract or surrealist art. It’s also strange and fascinating to see AI interpret a painting style and generate its own version of it. While Deep Dream Generator can not create images good enough for commercial use yet, it can still provide artistic results you are able to work with and be inspired from.

Finally this generator works by way of computational “energy points.” Images with a high resolution require more of your processing power, which will use up more of your energy points. You get 15 free energy points upon signing up and then you’ll need to pay.

Art Breeder – Mediocre

Last on the list is Art Breeder. It’s overall mediocre and I was not able to get any sort of meaningful results with this AI, but it may improve in the future. The unique selling point of this tool is that it states that will combine two images of your choosing into a totally new image, hence the name “Art Breeder” as you’re breeding new images.

However from actually using Art Breeder it only created a jumbled mess that is not usable in any sort of fashion. However this may change in the future so I’m putting it at the end of my list.

How do AI Art Generators work?

All the generators on this list work by way of entering a text prompt and setting specific constraints to the artistic style of the image.

To actually create the AI art, algorithms are written in a way where they are not constrained to a set of rules to follow, but rather they are designed to gain an understanding of specific aesthetics by analyzing thousands of images. The algorithm then creates new images that adhere to the aesthetics it has learned.

Best AI Art Generators – Conclusion

AI art generators are a technology that has tremendous potential for creative expression. I’m curious to see what artists and designers will create with these tools in the future. Overall, I’m most impress with Jasper AI due to it’s speed, Mid Journey for it’s artistic ability and Lensa for the creative selfies.
